ResumoThis brief paper presents an introduction to a series of abstracts that will be presented at a meeting at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, April 5-6, 2002. The goal of this meeting is to discuss the state of the science of determining the clinical significance for quality-of-life (QOL) assessments. At the heart of this meeting is the presentation of a series of 6 “core” manuscripts produced by a writing team of 30 international QOL experts. A panel consisting of members of regulatory agencies, patient advocates, oncologists, and QOL researchers will discuss each paper. At the conclusion of that meeting, another paper summarizing the state of the science on assessing the clinical significance of oncology QOL assessments will be compiled. A research agenda will be established to help direct further efforts in this area.
