ResumoMen’s football has long been marginalized within New Zealand culture, struggling for acceptance as an appropriately masculine and truly national sport. New Zealand’s unexpected qualification for the men’s 2010 FIFA World Cup – for only the second time in the nation’s history – created a space for media and public reimagining of football’s connection to New Zealand identity and its place in the sporting landscape. In this paper, we investigate the dynamic interaction between news media discourses and public perceptions via analysis of 1112 online news articles and photographs, and 1423 online public comments on news and fan websites. We conclude that media discourses that masculinized, ethnicized and nationalized the national men’s team were taken up by the public in complex ways that moved the national team closer to the centre of New Zealand sport, but did little to disrupt public perceptions of the sport as a whole.
