Resumo

The traditional endpoint in clinical trials of antiepileptic drugs has been based on counting complex partial seizures. Other aspects of seizures such as severity and precipitating factors also should be considered. A review of scales developed to assess multiple aspects of seizures is used to define additional aspects of seizures that could be measured in clinical trials. Three scales (VA Seizures Frequency and Severity Scale, Liverpool Seizure Severity Scale, and National Hospital Seizure Severity Scale) are compared for 15 aspects of seizure assessment. Nontraditional methods of seizure assessment might provide valuable data that could differentiate among treatments.
