ResumoThe modes of growth of abnormal eutectic structures in the Al-Si-Al-Al3Fe eutectic systems are compared. The Al-Al3Fe eutectic grows with an essentially isothermal interface, and its irregular morphology is due to the rigid growth mode of the Al3Fe phase. In the Al-Si system it is shown that the eutectic phases cannot grow at a common isothermal interface because accumulation of rejected silicon stifles growth of the aluminium phase. This forces frequent re-nucleation of the aluminum.
