It is found that the sharp rise in the Be/H ratio is due to the rapid growth of the abundance of its progenitors C, N, and O in the interstellar medium due to intense stellar nucleosynthesis and ejection in the early Galaxy. Infall of extragalactic matter has only marginal importance in the behavior of Be-9, but it has kept the Be/H ratio constant over the last billion yr. Constraints which Be-9 sets on the formation rate of massive stars in the first epochs of galactic evolution are discussed.
