Resumo

Etiology and PatiSoZogy. AchiIIobursitis is seen most frequentIy in women, since it is directIy influenced by the pressure of the upper quarter of the shoe posteriorIy and since women’s shoes are necessariIy more cupped to keep them on the feet because of the higher heeIs. There may be an associated rheumatic eIement. Bursae occur anywhere in the body where there is irritating pressure against a bony prominence. At the hee1, there are two bursae of importance near the point where the tendo AchiIIis inserts into the OS calcis. One is deep and the other immediateIy superficia1 to this attachment. The superficia1 one is more commonly invoIved. Its waIIs become thickened by chronic inff ammatory changes, fIuid accumuIates in the bursa, and occasionalIy suppuration occurs, but this is uncommon.
