ResumoWe present high signal-to-noise ratio observations of the near-infared hydrogen recombination lines |${\rm Pa}\beta$|, |${\rm Br} \gamma$| and |${\rm Br} \alpha$| in the galaxies NGC 1614 and 7714. The data are used in conjunction with existing optical line fluxes to examine the dust extinction towards the star-forming nuclei of these galaxies. In the case of NGC 1614, at least, the conventional model of a foreground absorbing screen is found to be incorrect, resulting in an underestimate of the true extinction.
