ResumoAbstract The purpose of this article is to contribute to the writing of a history of the so-called “Black theater” in Brazil. Its main goal is to demonstrate that the Companhia Negra de Revistas, in the 1920s, and the Teatro Experimental do Negro, in the 1940s and 1950s dealt with race issues but their productions were not without significant dilemmas and ambiguities.
