ResumoWe estimate the final state interactions of a knocked-out nucleon in inclusive electron-nucleus reactions representing these by an optical potential Vopt. It is shown that in an eikonal approximation the response function scales in a variable y containing characteristics of that potential. Im Vopt, when acting in the nuclear interior, is predicted to dominate to large y. It leads to a power fall-off in y of the response function for large y. No such behaviour is observed for 3He, 4He, 12C and 58Ni. Results based on a purely Re Vopt are in agreement with data.
