Resumo

Guided by the anomalous ratios of J/ψ to ψ′ decays to two-body hadronic modes, it is suggested that the hadronic form factors fall off exponentially as described by the overlap of wave functions within a nonrelativistic quark model. This behaviour, in contrastto asymptotic QCD relations, explains the drastically suppressed two-body decay rates of ψ′ compared with those of of the J/ψ. Furthermore, the same exponential form factor predicts correctly the dramatic decrease (of ∼ 10−5) in the reduced width when going from ℓ to J/ψ. Our approach thus avoids the need for a narrow gluonium state very near to the J/ψ mass. This form factor together with an approximate SU(3)F symmetry for the vertices can explain practically all the existing two-body hadronic decay modes of the J/ψ and the ψ.
