Resumo

Eugene Shoemaker (right) presents Walter Alvarez of the University of California, Berkeley, with the photographic evidence of the asteroid named in honor of Walter and his late father, Nobel laureate Luis Alvarez. Minor Planet 3581 Alvarez, the Mars‐crossing asteroid, was discovered at Palomar Observatory by Shoemaker, of the U.S. Geological Survey, Flagstaff, Ariz., and his wife Carolyn, who is the leading discoverer of comets in the 20th century. The presentation was made on the occasion of the second Conference on Global Catastrophes in Earth History, held October 20–23 at Snowbird, Utah.
