ResumoAbstract The methods of conventional art history have been widely applied to the history of photography. The usual pattern is the celebration of great individuals, style, influences and their dissemination across frontiers. One individual promoted in this manner is Alfred Stieglitz. He was indeed skilled at self-promotion, at promoting the work of his group of Photo-Secessionists, and at challenging opponents within the USA as well as in Europe with their various interpretations of the international style of pictorialism.
