ResumoFew if any surveys have been published about the characteristics, attitudes and professional relationships of ancillary staff working in special schools. Although the sample studied by Malcolm Woolf and Steven Bassett consisted of only 27 respondents, their findings are interesting in view of the scarcity of literature on the subject. The authors summarise the findings and make recommendations about future policy towards classroom assistants. Malcolm Woolf is deputy head, Endeavour School, Brentwood, Essex, and Steven Bassett is head, Northend Primary School, London Borough of Bexley.
