ResumoRats were unilaterally ovariectomized and pituitary-autotransplanted during metestrus, and 7–13 days later the remaining ovary was exposed to 3000 r of X-irradiation to destroy follicles. Corpora lutea and interstitial tissue showed no discernible histologic evidence of abnormality following X-irradiation. After treatment with PMS no follicular development was observed, and there was no indication of estrogen secretion as evidenced by the absence of stratification of vaginal epithelium. Estradiol caused stratification and mucification, but not cornification, indicating that the X-irradiated ovary continued to secrete progesterone. In animals which were mated prior to pituitary auto-transplantation and X-irradiation, injections of LH failed to induce implantation although implantation occurred following subsequent treatment with estradiol. Thus, following destruction of all follicles by X-rays the rat ovary continued to secrete progesterone, indicating follicles are not required for this luteal function. Under the same conditions no estrogen secretion of physiological significance occurred in response to PMS or LH. (Endocrinology84: 1004, 1969)
