Resumo

In this month's issue, Stein et al1 present a fascinating and provocative assessment of long-term complications of incisional glaucoma surgery, based on analysis of Medicare claims data. They used methodology first published in 1990 and refined over the subsequent 2 decades as Medicare claims data have become more detailed, and computational technology for manipulating multi-gigabyte–sized data files has become widespread.2 In 1990, this analysis required a mainframe computer and the mounting and dismounting of 30 reels of magnetic tape.
