ResumoThe elastic constants of several dilute alloys of manganese in copper have been measured in the temperature range from 4.2°K to 300°K by the pulse ultrasonic method. The three measured moduli show temperature dependences similar to those of pure copper. They all exhibited a linear decrease with increasing manganese concentration. The variation of the Debye temperature which was calculated from the 4.2°K values of the elastic constants was found to be about -0.6°K/at. per cent Mn. This implies an increase in the lattice specific heat within the “T3” temperature region of about 0.5 per cent per at. per cent Mn. The composition dependence of the shear moduli indicates that the charge of the Mn ion in the copper lattice is +3e. Since it has been found from magnetic and specific heat measurements that the spin of the ion is s = 42, it is concluded that there are four 3d electrons remaining on the Mn ion with parallel aligned spins.
