198 The wood-cut of 1468 (or 1461 or 1475 ?) (fig. 3) in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Munich, illustrating the relics of Maastricht, Aachen and Cornelimfnster with explanatory notes, clearly shows St. Joseph's stockings with the text: "Josephs hosen do Jhesus in gewonde(n) wart" (Joseph's stockings in which Jesus was wrapped up). Owing to this illustration of two separate leggings just as the pilgrims saw them we can imagine how the legend of St. Joseph's stockings came into being, and that it very probably originated exactly at Aachen or at least caught the popular fancy there to such an extent
