ResumoA high-resolution study of the formation of the CH3− anion in collisions of 6.3–7 eV electrons with acetaldehyde is reported. The dissociative attachment cross section is estimated to be of the order of 10−19 cm2. The CH3− ions are formed with zero kinetic energy despite excess energy of more than 3 eV. Study of the partially deuterated CH3CDO shows that no “scrambling” of the hydrogen atoms occurs prior to dissociation. Part of the CH3− ions appear to be metastable because of slow vibration-induced electron detachment. Assignment of the Feshbach resonances involved is discussed.
