Abstract The formation of a dislocation pile-up was examined for the condition where there is a finite removal probability of the short-range barriers (s.r.b.) to dislocation motion. The purpose of investigating this type of dynamic pile-up formation was to determine whether the rapid rate of slip-line formation in neutron-irradiated metals could be a thermally activated process. The evidence obtained affirms the possibility of having slip lines form rapidly while the process is still thermally activated.
