Resumo

The occurrence of polymorphonuclear granulocytes (PMN) in superficial pannus-free cartilage was investigated in articular cartilage sampIes from patients with rheumatoid arthritis. In 3 of 9 cases which showed light microscopically PMN-invasion into the superficial cartilage, these findings could be confirmed by electron microscopy. From these observations, it is concluded that PMNs which invade the articular cartilage via the synovial fluid are, because of their chondrolytic enzymes, involved in pannus-free cartilage destruction
