ResumoMedical educators and popular writers have ignored the topics of death and bereavement during most of the 20th-century revolution in medical technology and therapeutics. Only recently have we professionals discovered dying and the bereaved survivors, as we digest the remarkable medical and societal changes that have occurred over the past 70 years. To a great extent, the lay public has invited our participation regarding death and bereavement. The popular media and publishers have responded with a variety of magazine and newspaper articles and popular books. Roberta Temes, PhD, a practicing psychologist and journalist, has written Living With an Empty Chair: A Guide Through Grief for a broad audience, including medical and paramedical professionals, funeral directors, students, friends and family of a bereaved individual, and bereaved persons.
