ResumoLu Zhongwei's study of huidaomen in the Republican period is a classic Marxist analysis such as often found in the People's Republic of China. Huidaomen are presented as the "opiate of the people," peddled to the suffering masses during a difficult period by evil charlatans eager for money and fame. At the same time, Lu has done a great deal of work in the sources of the period and presents a useful sociological profile of huidaomen leaders and members.
