ResumoSince the end of the 1970s, the center for comprehensive sociological research at Krasnoiarsk State Pedagogical University has been monitoring the ongoing state and tendencies of development of the system of general secondary education in Krasnoiarsk Krai and has conducted periodic questionnaire surveys of teachers, upper-grade students, and parents concerning problems of school reform, to determine attitudes of the main participants in the teaching and upbringing process. The present article is devoted to an analysis of teachers' opinions concerning the current state of today's schools, reasons for difficulties experienced by the schools, tasks facing schools, and prospective paths of further transformation. It is based on the results of mass surveys of educators that were carried out in the city and rural schools of the krai in 1994 and in 1998, using the same standard questionnaire.1 In a number of cases use has been made of materials from the same survey that was carried out in 1991. In our opinion, the findings of the research, which reflect the specific situation in just one region of the country that is, nonetheless, quite large, make it possible to present what is to some extent a general picture of the processes that are taking place in the sphere of education in the Russian Federation.
