Resumo1. 1. Planarians grown in tap water containing 2.5 mM Ca2+ lose 60% of their total Ca2+ content by sectioning. We now show that a transitory increase in Ca2+ uptake occurred at the onset of DNA synthesis stimulation. 2. 2. The growth of intact planarians in hypocalcic mediums also reduced their Ca2+ content and changed their hormonal balance. 3. 3. The mediums containing 0.1–1 μM Ca2+ reduced serotonin and Ca2+ levels, increased dopamine content whereas noradrenaline content remained unchanged. 4. 4. These effects might explain the high level of DNA synthesis observed in planarians grown in these mediums and their rapid regeneration.
