Water spray and steam curtains have been used successfully in several accidental releases of hazardous gases. However, the knowledge is still very empirical and data are needed to optimize the use of these techniques. A multi-company research project is using the following programme: a state-of-the-art study; a theoretical model accounting for mass and heat transfer phenomena; pilot experiments to determine the effects of different hardware and operating parameters with different pollutants; validation in a wind-tunnel; and validation in large scale tests.
