ResumoIn the years immediately preceding the outbreak of the Reformation, Jakob Fugger, who was at the time one of the richest men in Europe, established a number of lavish endowments in his native city of Augsburg. Through them he set out to perpetuate his memory, provide intercession for his soul after death, cater for the needs of the poor and sick in the city and at the same time affirm his status as both a leading citizen and a member of the rural nobility. This book examines the three most important of those endowments and looks at the motives which prompted their creation and the way in which they survived the turbulent years of religious change. The endowments comprised a massive funerary chapel, said to have cost Fugger 23,000 fl., which dominated and reorientated the Carmelite Church of St Anna.
