Resumo

S INCE the advent of lmplantable cardiac pacemakers m the treatment of complete atnoventricular block, slgmficant numbers of pacemaker batteries have become exhausted for varlous reasons long before antlclpated Moreover, premature battery failure has usually occurred with little or no warning, thereby endangering the life of the patient Thus, it became obvious to us that a simple way of determmmg, in vlvo, the approximate state of charge of the pacemaker batteries would be valuable This study and the method developed 1s based upon the fact that, as the batteries release their electric charge, mercuric oxide IS converted to free metalhc mercury which can be quantltatlvely assessed readily by roentgen methods
