ResumoVARIATION OF MORPHOMETRIC CHARACTERS lN OGCOCEPHA -LUS VESPERTILlO (LINNAEUS) (TELEOSTEI, LOPHII FORMES, OGCOCEPHALlDAE).Patterns of geographic variation in 10 morphometric characters were analyzed in a sample of 91 specimens ofthe batfish, Ogcocephalus vespertilio (L.), from the NE and SE Brazilian coast, using multivariate statistics and randomi zation tests. The spec imens were ordinated by principal components analysis in two groups corresponding to the regions nOl1h and south of the 23°C isothenn, and size variation was found to account for 70.3 %, whereas shape differences accounted for 23.6% of the total variation in 1110rphometric characters. The two gro ups were difJerent at the 1% significance levei by multivariale analysis of variance based on the Wilk's criterion, tesled by a randol11ization procedure.Width of illicial cavity and distance ti'om anus to anal tin were the characters mosl contributing to lhe differentiation ofthe population samples.
