ResumoThe pyrolysis of the Tarfaya (Morocco) oil shale was carried out in a modified Fisher-assay-type apparatus using either nitrogen or steam as a sweeping gas. Differences were observed in the yield and the composition of the obtained oil. Pyrolysis under water vapor gave an increase in the yield as opposed to pyrolysis under nitrogen. In addition, the oils obtained are more paraffinic. Furthermore, the presence of water vapor considerably reduced the amount of sulfur in the residues. Increasing the flow rate of water vapor leads to an increase in the total yield and the amount of paraffins, aromatics and aspahaltenes, and a decrease in the amount of polar compounds.
