Resumo

Abstract Fluorescent lanthanide chelates and their detection using time-resolved fluorimetry for in vitro studies are discussed. Time-resolved fluoroimmunoassays with dissociation of the lanthanide ion to the solution are very sensitive and are today widely employed in clinical laboratories. In many applications directly fluorescent chelates are needed, but they do not yet offer a comparable sensitivity. It is concluded that dissociation enhanced time-resolved fluorimetry provides a sensitivity comparable to that of phosphorus-32 in DNA hybridization assays. Fluorescent lanthanide chelates are a promising new group of labels for in vitro biospecific assays.
