ResumoWe describe the construction, operating characteristics, and use of a large segmented liquid argon/iron ionization calorimeter. With this instrument we have carried out quantitative studies of the development of hadronic showers at high energies. Results on both the longitudinal and transverse development of showers are given. The energy of an incident hadron can be determined with a resolution of: σEE = (8.5 + 28√EH)%, and its direction with a resoluti σθ = (16 + 433EH)mrad.
