Resumo

The generic name, Mielichhoferia Nees, Hornsch. & Sturm. is synonymous with and has priority over Haplodontium Hampe. Species traditionally classified in Haplodontium have been transferred to Mielichhoferia, and species traditionally included in Mielichhoferia need a different generic name. Schizymenium Harv. ex Hook. is the earliest name available. Forty-one new combinations are made in Schizymenium. A key to the three genera of the Bryaceae subfamily Mielichhoferioideae is provided. The subfamily Mielichhoferioideae Broth. of the Bryaceae is characterized by highly branched plants often bearing inflorescences in a lateral position, and by variously reduced types of peristome structure. Within the subfamily, three genera are traditionally recognized (as in Brotherus 1924): Haplodontium Hampe, Mielichhoferia Nees, Hornsch. & Sturm., and Synthetodontium Card. According to Brotherus (1924), Haplodontium has a single, exostomial peristome, Mielichhoferia has a single, endostomial peristome or sometimes a double peristome, and Synthetodontium has a double peristome in which the endostome is not clearly organized into segments and cilia. Shaw and Crum (1982, 1984) determined that the type of Mielichhoferia, M. mielichhoferiana (Funck) Loeske, has a double peristome consisting of well developed exostome teeth and a rudimentary endostomial basal membrane, similar in structure to the peristomes of many species of Haplodontium. This was in contrast to earlier interpretations of the peristome in M. mielichhoferiana as single and endostomial. As a consequence of this reinterpretation of peristome homology in M. mielichhoferiana, the generic name Mielichhoferia must be considered synonymous with the later name, Haplodontium. Shaw and Crum (1984) made new combinations for those Haplodontium species that had never been included in Mielichhoferia. Pending more intensive studies of morphology and relationships of species in the Mielichhoferioideae, Shaw and Crum did not make new combinations for species previously placed in Mielichhoferia. The results of these studies now indicate that many species traditionally included in Mielichhoferia differ in several gametophytic and sporophytic characters from species included in Haplodontium. The generic name Schizymenium Harv. ex Hook., 1840, is the earliest available for these species. Names cited in the Index Muscorum under Mielichhoferia may not appear here for one of several reasons: they are synonymous (either nomenclaturally or taxonomically) with earlier names; they actually belong in Mielichhoferia rather than Schizymenium; or type specimens have not been examined. The three genera of the Mielichhoferioideae can be distinguished by the following key. There are a few exceptions to these diagnostic generic features; such exceptions will be discussed elsewhere. 1. Plants paroicous, autoicous, rarely synoicous; peristome most commonly single and endostomial, rarely absent or double; exostome teeth, when present, sm ooth Schizym enium 1. Plants dioicous; peristome single and exostomial or double with long exostome teeth and an endostomial membrane not differentiated into segments and cilia; exostome teeth reticulate, papillose, or striate (smooth in Mielichhoferia macrocarpa and M. himalayana) -------........ . .... ......... 2 2. Endostome rudimentary or absent, scarcely exceeding the capsule rim Mielichhoferia 2. Endostome extending 1/2-/3 the length of the exostome teeth and adherent to them Synthetodontium Schizymenium Harv. ex Hook., Icon. P1. Rar. 3: 202. 1840. Type: S. bryoides Harv. ex Hook.
