ResumoIsolation from the sponge Ircinia oros of two new isomeric linear C-21 furanoterpenes, ircinin-3 (I) and -4 (II) is reported. These are closely related to sesterterpenes iricinin-1 (III) and -2 (IV), occurring in the same sponge as major terpene components. In addition, two isomeric linear furanosesterterpenes, furospongin-3 (V) and -4 (VI) have been identified in the sponge Spongia officinalis, from which six C-21 furanoterpenes have been previously described. These compounds support the hypothesis that C-21 terpenes found in sponges should be considered biogenetically as truncated sester-terpenes.
