ResumoPolymyxin B, a polypeptide antibiotic produced by Bacillus polymyxa, is synthesized towards the end of the exponential growth phase of the organism. Radioactive diaminobutyric acid is taken up by the cells and incorporated into the antibiotic and into other basic peptides. The synthesis of polymyxin, whether measured by the increase in the antibiotic titre or by the incorporation of diaminobutyric acid, is not inhibited by chloramphenicol or chlortetracycline.
