ResumoGeosynthetic materials have become critical components in the design and performance of mining facilities. Geosynthetic materials are now commonly used for containment of process solutions in heap leach pads, process and overflow ponds, tailings impoundments, and waste rock facilities. Geosynthetic materials are also used in foundation stabilization, mine reclamation, surface water diversion structures, and in environmental projects (revegetation and erosion control). Due to the nature and location of mining projects, the performance envelope of geosynthetic materials is often pushed beyond the limits of typical design procedures and recommendations. To cope with the harsh mining conditions, innovative design approaches, testing, and construction methods are used. This paper presents some design approaches used in the application of geosynthetic materials to mining projects, with a focus on geomembrane liner design and testing, and plastic pipe design and performance.
