Effect of Different Oxygen Tensions on Chromosome Breakage Induced by X-Rays in the Ehrlich Ascites Tumor

ResumoABS>A study was made of the nature and frequency of chromosomal aberrations induced by 2000 r of x rays in the cells of the Ehrlich ascites tumor, subline ELD, under different oxygen tensions. The number of breaks per cell did not vary significantly at the different oxygen tensions studied; the number of fragments was 4.4 times as high as at high oxygen tensions; and the chromatid exchanges were 4.5 as high in anoxia. These data are considered to be indicative that high oxygen tensions produce a permanent inactivation of the rejoining system. Since the aberrations observed in anoxia were predominantly of the chromatid type, whereas those induced in oxygen were of the chromosome type, it is also suggested that oxygen or anoxia could modify the predominant stage of mitosis of a cell population when the dose and treatment are administered, as in this case, over a long period of time.
