ResumoIn 1966, Norway was the fifth most important shipbuilding nation in the world, and the fourth in Europe, before France and Italy. Two yards were capable of launching ships of more than 100,000 T.d.w. With 34,000 workers, naval industries were the second largest industry in Norway. They are expanding rapidly, thanks largely to the fact Norway possesses large fishing and coastal trading fleets, and one of the world's largest merchant marines. Most of the large shipbuilding yards are installed around Oslo Fjord and the Vestlandet coast between Stavanger and Bergen, but small yards and naval machine construction establishments operate also in the islands of the More og Romsdal, from Alesund to Kristiansund.
