ResumoMuch new information has accrued in recent years attesting to the expanding taxonomic and clinical spectrum of Capnocytophaga. The incorporation of DF-2 and DF-2-like organisms into the genus has broadened not only the bacteriologic spectrum but also the clinical spectrum of disease caused by this group of organisms. In addition, increased awareness and improved microbiologic techniques have fostered the recognition of new clinical syndromes caused by the original species, e.g., focal infections and perinatal sepsis in nongranulocytopenic hosts. The inclusion of C. canimorsus and C. cynodegmi with their respective clinical syndromes document this genus as a significant opportunistic and general pathogen. The persistent difficulty in identifying the Capnocytophaga spp. to the species level with generally available microbiologic tests, and the definition of their virulence factors present a challenge for the future.
