The word is the cornerstone of human language. Several approaches may be used to analyse this complex subject. We shall consider here the most important dimensions of this entity: the magic value of the word and its creative power; the cognitive dimension associated with the question of naming and designation of reality, generating the vocabulary of natural languages; the significative dimension where the issue of the linguistic sign is analysed together with its relationship with reality.
