The onset strain of serrated flow varies when a quenched aluminium alloy is annealed using various methods. Corresponding changes in the precipitation behaviour indicate that Guinier-Preston zones are sinks for excess vacancies and/or substitutional atoms, and thus prevent the development of serrations.
