I/O response is usually the most important constraint on DBMS performance. We propose an intelligent I/O server (I2OS) to help this situation. The I2OS is a hardware/software subsystem which is functionally equivalent to a conventional I/O device. The difference is that the I2OS includes extra hardware and logic to quicken performance. The I2OS incorporates an expert system for recognizing usage patterns and prefetching the next expected disk pages. Statistics are regularly collected so the I2OS can learn and adapt to changes in disk access patterns. The I2OS is transparent to operating systems and transparent to DBMS.
