ResumoBurning profiles obtained by derivative thermogravimetric analysis are useful for obtaining relative combustion characteristics of fuels and for predicting combustion performance in boilers. However, the interpretation of these profiles is not always straightforward, particularly with respect to the combustion peaks. In this paper, the use of burning profiles for coal reactivity studies is reviewed. Factors which affect the appearance of the combustion peaks in the burning profiles and complicate data interpretation are summarized. Special emphasis is given to catalytic effects, because this factor is often not adequately considered when interpreting the data.
