Formation of expansive calcium sulphoaluminate by the action of the sulphate ion on weathered granites in a calcium hydroxide - saturated medium

ResumoThe present work was intented to confirm the formation of calcium trisulphoaluminate (ettringite) by action of the sulphate ion on granites in a calcium hydroxide-saturated medium. Experiments carried out consisted in the storage at room temperature and during given time periods of rock fragments or samples of ground materials in a sulphate solution and in sea water saturated with calcium hydroxide. By X-ray diffraction analysis the formation of ettrin gite was confirmed in all cases observed. With the finely ground materials, the presence of ettringite is detected after one month treatment, which shows a marked influence of the fineness of materials on the rate of the reaction. O presente trabalho teve como objectivo confirmar a formaçao de trisulfoaluminato de cálcio, etringite, por acção do ião sulfato sobre granitos alterados em meio saturado de hidroxido de cálcio. As experiências realizadas consistiram em conservar, durante determinados periodos de tempo e à temperatura ambiente, fragmentos de rocha ou amostras dos materiais moidos em solução de sulfato e em água do mar saturadas de hidróxido de cálcio. Foi comprovada, por análise por difracção de raios X, a formação de etringite em todos os casos. Com as amostras moidas finamente, a presença de etringite é detectada já ao fim de um mês de tratamento o que revela uma influência marcada da finura dos materiais sobre a velocidade de reação.
