ResumoThresholds and slope efficiencies of Nd:YAG were compared to those of Nd:Cr:GSGG at temperatures ranging between 30– 300 K, using single shot flashlamp excitation. At room temperature, slope effieciencies of Nd:Cr:GSGG are about twice that of Nd:YAG while the thresholds are about the same. Both slope efficiencies and thresholds are reduced in the case of Nd:YAG when cooling from 300 to 80 K. Nd:Cr:GSGG seems to be temperature independent. The implications of the differing features of Nd:YAG versus Nd:Cr:GSGG are discussed.
