ResumoBecause of its intermediate location between Stockholm's metropolitan region and South- Western Finland, the Aland archipelago is heavily trafficked by ferries, some of which are among the largest affloat. The main entry point to the system, the port of Mariehamn, performs a traffic well above the sole satisfaction of the transport needs of the insular population. Its activity is inflatted by the touristic function, exacerbated by the ferry companies themself in respect with the popular 24-hour minicruises. However there are clear signs of saturation and the archipelago is also becoming transited just because of the high emotional value of its seascapes, without sizeable profit for the islands' economy.
