ResumoCorneal dystrophies are generally bilateral, symmetrical, noninflammatory, and familial; they are not associated with systemic disease. They are classified according to the areas of the cornea involved and the breed of the animal affected. Dogs with epithelial dystrophies present occasionally with irritative or erosive corneal disease; however, dogs with lipid stromal dystrophies exhibit no signs of pain and often demonstrate distinct zones of crystalline deposits upon corneal examination. Endothelial and stromal dystrophies, with resultant corneal edema, occur in both the dog and the cat.
