Abstract The sensitivity of the stellar X-ray log (N) - log (S) to the relative density of young stars resulting from the assumed stellar birthrate is discussed. It is shown that given the sensitivity of X-ray model predicted log (N) - log (S) to the stellar birthrate, X-ray flux limited surveys can be used to impose relevant constraints on the history of the star-formation rate in the Galaxy. It is also shown that current X-ray surveys are compatible with high recent stellar birthrates, but incompatible with past stellar formation rates much higher than today's. The limitations of the present application due to available X-ray data are discussed.
