ResumoA mini-revolution is underway in solar energy engineering in Israel. It embodies a new approach of miniaturization for the efficient collection of sunlight, in particular for high-flux and high-temperature applications. At the heart of the system is a small (e.g., 20-cm diameter) solar mini-dish concentrator with an optical fiber that transports concentrated sunlight to a remote receiver (see above photograph). In this article, Jeff Gordon, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel describes the programs that he and Daniel Feuermann have initiated and are advancing in the novel use of solar energy in fibre optic surgery.
