ResumoI t is shown t h a t in t h e presence of h igh ly cooled surfaces a n d of m o d e r a t e M a c h n u m b e r s a t t h e o u t e r edge of t h e b o u n d a r y layer, t h e crossflow in t h e b o u n d a r y layer is negl igible even for large t r ansversa l p ressure g r a d i e n t s . F r o m t h i s cons ide ra t ion a r ap id m e t h o d for e s t i m a t i n g t h e h e a t t r ans fe r over t h e nose po r t i on of a r b i t r a r y t h r e e d i m e n s i o n a l b l u n t bodies in hype r son ic flight is derived. T h e a p p r o x i m a t e r e su l t s t h u s o b t a i n e d c o m p a r e very favorably w i t h k n o w n exact so lu t i ons . T h e m e t h o d in q u e s t i o n reduces t h e b o u n d a r y layer p r o b l e m to t h e d e t e r m i n a t i o n of t h e inviscid s t r e a m l i n e p a t t e r n on t h e surface of t h e body ; a p rocedure for o b t a i n i n g t h e s e s t r e a m l i n e s f rom a p ressure d i s t r i b u t i o n m e a s u r e m e n t is o u t l i n e d .
