Resumo

Pursuing their inquiries on the religious changes in Quebec, the authors examine the dynamics of contemporary religious imagery. Networks of new symbols are grafted to traditional meanings (vg. reincarnation associated with resurrection), whereas new significations are associated with traditional symbols (such as god). Constancy of belief versus the ephemerality of beliefs in confirmed. The latter change not only with the evolution of life -beliefs of child, adolescent, and adult- but also following the experiences of individuals confronted with an open market of beliefs. The contemporary individual is a semiotic believer pursuing the quest for meaning through the mediatic staging of religious symbols
